Our teeth often become darker as we age, due to changes in their mineral structure. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, drinking dark colored liquids like coffee, tea and red wine, and smoking. Certain antibiotic medications (like tetracycline) can cause teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel, as well.
Dr. Sherri Worth and her cosmetic dentistry team are experts at dental bleaching, also known as teeth whitening. The most popular teeth whitening methods are bleaching strips, bleaching gel, and laser (or power) bleaching. Power bleaching, such as the popular ZOOM!® treatment, uses light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching at our Newport Beach dental office. The effects of teeth whitening can last for several months, but may vary depending on your lifestyle and diet.
The first step in your teeth whitening or bleaching process is a thorough examination by Dr. Sherri Worth, during which she will take your health and dental history including allergies and sensitivities, observe your mouth tissues and teeth restorations, and take full digital X-rays.
If the oral exam shows that your teeth have decay or infected gums, Dr. Worth will recommend taking care of those before the whitening. Also, bleaching is most effective with yellow discolored teeth and not as effective when the original tooth color is grayish and may require custom bleaching trays, or when you have tooth-color fillings. In these cases, Dr. Worth may recommend porcelain veneers or bonding instead.
At our Newport Beach cosmetic dentistry clinic, we use the two most effective teeth whitening methods available today:
To determine the effectiveness of the whitening procedure, Dr. Worth uses the whitening shade guides used to measure tooth color. As a result of tooth bleaching or whitening, our Orange County patients have seen substantial improvement in the brightness of their smiles, with their teeth becoming two to seven shades whiter.
The ZOOM!® tooth whitening procedure uses light to activate hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. Before the treatment, Dr. Sherri Worth’s expert team will cover your teeth and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. ZOOM!® hydrogen peroxide whitening gel will then be applied and will remain in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated, for a total of three sessions or 45 minutes. During this time, you can relax, watch TV or listen to music.
As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged. The complete procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual ZOOM!® teeth whitening session. After the ZOOM!® treatment, we will apply a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel to your teeth. We will also give you a take-home touch-up kit to maintain your new beautiful white smile.
Gel bleaching involves applying a high concentration of peroxide gel to the teeth with thin plastic trays for a short period of time, usually about 15-20 minutes. We will paint a light-cured protective layer on the gums before your procedure to reduce the risk of chemical burns to the soft tissues in you mouth. For professional results, our Newport Beach dental experts will ensure that the application trays have an ideal fit for your teeth in order to retain the bleaching gel and ensure the even and full tooth exposure to the teeth whitener. After the first application, bleaching trays will be removed and the procedure will be repeated up to two more times.
You can also do gel bleaching at home with the prescription-only bleaching kit purchased at Dr. Sherri Worth’s dental office. Take-home kits incorporate an easy-to-use lower-concentration peroxide gel that remains on the teeth for an hour or longer (sometimes overnight).
The cost of your teeth whitening treatment in our Newport Beach dental office will be based on the treatment method you choose, as for the most part whitening treatments are not covered by dental insurance. Take-home bleaching kits are typically the less expensive alternative compared to in-office gel bleaching and ZOOM!® laser whitening.
