Dental veneers, also called porcelain veneers, are thin, custom-made sheets of tooth-colored porcelain designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth to change their color, shape, size, or length.
Veneers may be a good cosmetic dentistry option for you if you have:
Veneers are not suitable for every patient, and teeth bleaching or whitening may be more suitable for those patients who have healthy teeth but want them to be whiter. However, the porcelain laminates can create the foundation for a perfect smile for many people.
Porcelain veneers provide a natural tooth appearance and are durable and stain resistant. They are biocompatible as porcelain is well tolerated by the gum tissue. They also protect the surface of damaged teeth and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Veneers offer a less invasive alternative to crowns since they don’t require extensive shaping prior to placement, yet provide a more aesthetic appearance. Most importantly, dental veneers are an excellent option for quickly achieving a beautiful, white smile and correcting flawed teeth.
At Dr. Sherri Worth’s Newport Beach office, you can get dental veneers in three appointments – one for a consultation, and the other two to make and apply the veneers. During your consultation, Dr. Worth will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate for you, possibly take digital X-rays, and discuss what the procedure will involve and its benefits and considerations.
During your first veneer appointment, Dr. Worth will prepare your teeth by removing a minimal amount of their outer enamel, so that veneers could be added to the tooth surface. We use local anesthetic and a refined technique to ensure painless treatment. We also offer the services of an excellent anesthesiologist who will administer mild intravenous sedation if necessary. Dr. Worth will then take impressions of your teeth and give you a chance to participate in the design of your veneers, including shape, length, width and color. Immediately, the impressions of your teeth will be sent to a dental laboratory that makes permanent porcelain veneers. You will also receive beautiful temporary veneers that you will wear until your next office visit.
During your second veneer appointment, the veneers will be tried on and permanently bonded to your teeth. Dr. Worth will temporarily place veneers on your teeth to achieve the proper fit. Next, your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and etched to prepare them for bonding. Once bonded, Dr. Worth will evaluate your bite and make the final adjustments. She may ask you to return for a follow-up visit to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your veneers.
The cost of veneers is not generally covered by insurance in California, but you should always check with your specific dental insurance company. You can review your individual insurance policy or ask Dr. Worth’s Newport Beach office to check with you insurance company for you. Dr. Worth will work with you to determine the cost of your veneers, depending on the extent of the procedure and your insurance coverage. Once your veneers are in place, they will last up to 10-15 years.
After your teeth have been prepared and before your permanent veneers have been applied, your teeth may become more sensitive to cold food and drinks. Using a straw for cold drinks can help. You should also brush your teeth regularly to avoid staining and remember to floss since gum problems may compromise bonding the porcelain veneers on permanently.
Once veneers have been placed, they will be smooth and will function in the same way as natural teeth, and you can enjoy your regular diet and nutrition. However, veneers are not indestructible. To protect your veneers from chipping, avoid biting down into hard substances and avoid bad habits such as chewing on fingernails or pencils, and grinding your teeth.
Dr. Sherri Worth’s dental practice is conveniently located in Newport Beach, the heart of Orange County. Schedule your appointment today to see if dental veneers might be an option to create your new healthy and beautiful smile!
